What Does Father’s Day Mean To You?

Father’s Day isn’t just a date on the calendar; it’s a heartfelt celebration that stirs emotions and memories unique to each of us.

Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June, so it doesn’t always fall on the same date.

For some, it’s about honoring the unwavering support and love of a father or father figure.

In my case, as well as many others, it’s a moment to reflect on the lessons learned and the legacy left behind.

It is a celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society.

Whether Father’s Day is filled with nostalgia, gratitude, or perhaps a tinge of sorrow, its meaning resonates differently with everyone.

What is the History of Father’s Day?

Father’s Day emerged in the early 20th century as a counterpart to Mother’s Day,.

It was spearheaded by Sonora Smart Dodd who wanted to honor her widowed father’s dedication in raising six children alone.

The first official Father’s Day celebration took place on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington.

Over the next six decades, the holiday gradually gained traction., with President Calvin Coolidge lending his support in 1924.

However, it wasn’t until 1972 that Father’s Day earned permanent national recognition.

President Richard Nixon signed it into law, cementing its place as an annual celebration of paternal bonds and sacrifices.

Time is a precious gift, and cherishing moments with our fathers or father figures reminds us of life’s fleeting nature.

What Does Father’s Day Mean to Me?

To me, Father’s Day is bittersweet.

Before August 25, 2012, Father’s Day was a holiday I loved to celebrate, as my dad was not only my dad but also my friend, my mentor, and my hero!

I was so fortunate to have my dad for 50 years of my life. Although it wasn’t enough time for me, I do realize how lucky I was to have him in my life for as long as I did.

Father’s Day in Honor of My Father

My father, David Sahud, was loved and admired by literally everyone who knew him. I can’t think of anyone who didn’t love my dad.

One of the things he was well known for was his sense of humor.

He was hysterical! I am pleased to say that many have said I inherited my sense of humor from my father!

In his later years, Dad participated in many writing groups and even started his own.

He wrote numerous short stories that I have compiled into a book as a tribute to him AND to share his wit with others.

At first, I was going to title the book to please Google. But then I decided to title the book to reflect the content of the stories and the man behind them.

No one will ever search for “From Self-Proclaimed Nerd, to Accomplished Executive, to Befuddled Snowbird”  but the title could not be more fitting.

Who can’t relate to “Life’s Journey Through the Absurd Told With Sophistication and Wise-Ass Humor“?

A Short Biography of My Dad in Honor of Father’s Day

Dad was a retired businessman with a wealth of experience as CEO of multiple companies in the plastic films and insulation sectors.

He held a Master’s degree in Chemistry and a second Master’s in Management Engineering.

In his leisure time, Dad enjoyed crafting short stories, exploring new destinations, and avoiding chilly climates.

Above all, he was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, friend, and mentor to those who had the privilege of knowing and adoring him.

About His Stories

Dad’s storytelling narratives are captivating, amusing, and woven with a blend of actual events and embellished historical truths.

He grew up during the Great Depression as a Jewish boy with an Arabic-sounding name in what he describes as a turbulent family setting.

This provided ample material for his tales.

These stories resonate with the Jewish community, evoking familiar experiences.

Retirees will find parallels to their own lives and be able to relate to the stories.

Meanwhile, younger generations can gain insight into their parents’ experiences and foresee relatable moments ahead.

Business professionals will draw inspiration from Dad’s adeptness in turning challenging situations into favorable outcomes.

An avid enthusiast of Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David, Dad mirrors their comedic styles in his stories, often poking fun at himself and others within the context of everyday life scenarios.

Snowbirds will enjoy Just Bitching and Moaning as they can relate to making the same trek every year from their homes in the cold weather to Florida, where it is warm.

COULDN’T STOP READING UNTIL IT WAS OVER, David Sahud’s stories hold universal appeal. I cannot imagine anyone, young or old not enjoying them thoroughly.

Whether he is writing about upbringing or careers, relatives or hypochondriacs they capture you. My only regret, I finished the book in one sitting. I want more stories. Give yourself a treat, buy and read this book.

A little off-color, a lot profound, always funny!, This is a great read! It’s funny and poignant and insightful – and did I say “funny”? Mr. Sahud has a twinkle in his eye and compassion in his heart, and that life-view makes for a collection of short stories that will move you and stay with you.

Read it in one sitting or come back to it again and again, buy it for yourself or buy it as a gift… Whatever you do, buy it and enjoy!
