How to Create Memorable Slogans That Stick

Developing a brand identity and creating associated marketing materials, such as slogans, is a powerful way to tell your target audience why they should do business with you.

What is the Difference Between Slogans and Taglines?

A tagline is a clear and concise phrase that reinforces your brand. It also is the distinguishing factor between your company and your competitors.

Taglines are usually short and are a counterpart to your company logo. It doesn’t change and should be used in all your marketing initiatives.

Alternatively, a slogan represents one product, service, or campaign. It is generally a short and catchy statement that supports your branding.

Why Create Slogans?

As mentioned above, brands use slogans to grab the attention of their target audience. The more memorable, creative, and recognizable, the better.

A slogan that clearly differentiates you from your competition will set you apart, especially in a highly competitive industry.

Oftentimes, hearing the name of a brand in isolation doesn’t resonate with consumers. However, when they hear a clever slogan, it will connect your brand to your potential customer.

How Can You Create Memorable Slogans for Your Company That Stick in Your Customers’ Minds?

Although slogans are short and simplistic, it doesn’t mean they are easy to create.

Start by thinking about your primary benefits to your target market.

Then consider what your brand offers that your competitors don’t. This is also known as your unique selling proposition (USP).

Try brainstorming different ideas with team members or associates to come up with the most effective slogan that defines the essence of your campaign and elicits an emotional response from your prospective customers.

Look at your competitors’ slogans and compare your ideas to theirs. Identify where your offerings differ and be sure to include your keywords.

Remember, “they” only care how you can solve their problem or answer their question. Benefits before features!

How to Know What Your Competitors’ Are Doing

Of course, you can simply put the names of your competitors in a Google search and see what pops up. And, you can also use tools like KeywordSpy or SpyFu to spy on your competitors.

If you do some research and find out a few of your competitors’ slogans, you will have a better idea of your market and be in a better position to create a slogan for yourself.

You might want to use rhymes and jingles to create more power in your branding for your slogan. Remember to focus on your USP (unique selling proposition) and the benefits of your product or service!

These types of slogans are catchy and therefore, memorable.

The Proof is in the Pudding

Remember KISS (Keep it Simple, Stupid)? All brands and marketers should remember this principle and not confuse their target with complicated features or advertising.

Below are examples of brands that do it right with their slogans. How many do you recognize?

  • Melts in Your Mouth, Not in Your Hands
  • Just Do It
  • What’s in Your Wallet?
  • Betcha Can’t Eat Just One
  • The Breakfast of Champions
  • Does She, or Doesn’t She?
  • Fly the Friendly Skies
  • Finger Lickin’ Good
  • Snap! Crackle! Pop!
  • Can’t Believe I Ate the Whole Thing
  • When You Care Enough to Send the Very Best
  • Where’s the Beef?
  • All the News That’s Fit to Print
  • The Quicker Picker Upper
  • Fly the Friendly Skies
  • Can You Hear Me Now?
  • Because You’re Worth It
  • Have it Your Way
  • Mmm, Mmm Good!

Now, obviously, these are the “big boy” brands, but the same concept applies to every business owner.

You can see how vital the slogan is, to back up the actual brand name. So, think about a slogan to back up your brand message.
